In Ground Fruit Tree Planting
1. Finding the Perfect Spot
Fruit trees are resilient, but they are particular about their environment. Before you grab your shovel, check your yard for these four essentials:
- Follow the Sun: Apple and pear trees require full sun, meaning 6 to 8 hours of direct, unobstructed sunlight each day. Morning sun is especially vital as it dries dew off the leaves, preventing fungal diseases.
- Check the Drainage: Fruit trees hate "wet feet." Avoid low-lying areas where water collects after rain. If you have heavy soil, planting on a slight mound can help improve drainage.
- Avoid Frost Pockets: Cold air settles in the lowest parts of your yard. Avoid these "frost pockets," as a late spring frost can freeze blossoms and ruin your harvest.
- Give Them Room to Grow: Trees get bigger than you think! Plant dwarf trees at least 10 feet away from your home’s foundation and fences. Semi-dwarf trees need about 15 feet of clearance. Always look up to ensure you aren't planting under power lines.
2. Planting Your Tree
Planting day is the most important day of your tree’s life. Follow these steps to ensure a strong, healthy start:
- Dig Wide, Not Deep: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, but exactly the same depth. You want the tree to rest on solid, undisturbed soil to prevent settling.
- Respect the Graft Union: Look for a swollen bump near the base of the trunk—this is the graft. This bump must remain 2 to 3 inches above the soil line. Burying it can cause the tree to grow to full, unmanageable size or rot.
- Spread the Roots: If planting a bare-root tree, gently spread the roots outward. If potted, tease out any roots that are circling the root ball.
- Backfill and Water: Refill the hole with the native soil you dug out (avoid adding fertilizers or potting soil inside the hole, as this keeps roots from exploring). Water deeply as you fill to eliminate air pockets.
3. Companion Planting with Purpose
Nature rarely grows trees in a vacuum. You can boost your orchard's health by creating a "pollinator guild" at the base of your tree. By replacing grass with these four specific native plants, you create a self-sustaining ecosystem:
- Purple Coneflower: These are beacons for native bees and butterflies. By increasing pollinator traffic in your yard, you maximize your tree's ability to set a heavy crop of fruit. Their deep roots also help break up compacted soil.
- Black-Eyed Susans: These plants are magnets for beneficial insects, such as hoverflies and parasitic wasps, which act as your orchard's natural pest control team by hunting aphids and other tree-damaging insects.
- Nodding Onion: As a member of the allium family, the scent of these onions is an effective natural deterrent. It helps confuse pests and discourages burrowing rodents and deer from bothering your young trees.
- Common Blue Violet: These function as a "living mulch." Their low-growing foliage spreads to shade the soil, keeping the ground cool and moist for the tree's roots while out-competing invasive weeds.
Planting Tip: Clear the grass in a 3-foot radius around your tree. Plant your guild in a ring along the outer edge (the drip line). Keep the area within 6 inches of the trunk clear of all plants to ensure good airflow and prevent bark rot.
4. Pruning for Health and Harvest
Pruning is essential for air circulation and fruit production. The best time to prune is late winter or early spring while the tree is dormant.
- Remove the "3 Ds": Always cut out any wood that is Dead, Damaged, or Diseased.
- Clear the Clutter: Remove branches that cross or rub against each other, as these create wounds where disease can enter.
- Remove Vertical Growth: Cut off "water sprouts" (branches shooting straight up from the limbs) and "suckers" (shoots growing from the base). These sap energy without producing fruit.
- Let the Light In: A properly pruned tree should have an open canopy. Aim to remove enough growth that sunlight can reach the center of the tree and a gentle breeze can pass through. This ripens the fruit evenly and prevents mildew.
Container Fruit Tree Planting
1. The Right Pot & Spot
Container trees are mobile, but they have specific needs to keep them happy in a restricted space
Size Container: Start with a container that is at least 15 to 20 gallons. It should have drainage holes at the bottom—fruit trees absolutely cannot sit in standing water.
The Soil Blend: Never use garden soil in a pot; it will become hard as a rock and suffocate the roots. Use a high-quality, potting mix that is formulated for drainage.
Follow the Sun: Just like in-ground trees, potted trees need 6 to 8 hours of direct, full sun daily. If your patio is shady, these trees will not produce fruit.
Weight & Mobility: A fully watered tree in a large pot is heavy. Consider placing your pot on a rolling plant dolly so you can move it to follow the sun or protect it from harsh winter winds.
2. Planting Your Container Tree
Check the Depth: Ensure your pot is deep enough to accommodate the roots without folding them. Just like in-ground planting, the graft union (the swollen bump at the base) must remain 2 to 3 inches above the soil line.
Fill it Up: Fill the bottom of your pot with a few inches of potting mix, set the tree in place, and fill around the sides. Leave about 2 inches of space at the top of the pot (the "headroom") to make watering easier without splashing soil over the edge.
Water Immediately: Water until you see liquid running out of the drainage holes at the bottom. This settles the soil around the roots.
3. Container Companions & Mulching
In a container, space is a premium. You can still use companion plants to benefit your tree, but less is more. Choose one or two of these to avoid crowding the tree's roots, and make sure to leave a few inches of space around the trunk.
Purple Coneflower: Their deep taproots are great for in-ground, but in pots, they provide beautiful vertical interest and attract pollinators that help your tree fruit.
Black-Eyed Susans: These attract beneficial insects like hoverflies. In a pot, they create a beautiful, dense filler that shades the soil and keeps the tree's root system cool.
Nodding Onion: The perfect container companion. Because they have a small root footprint, they can be tucked into the edge of the pot without competing with the tree. Their scent also helps deter pests.
Common Blue Violet: These act as a "living mulch." They will creep along the soil surface, cooling the pot and preventing the potting mix from drying out too quickly in the summer sun.
Pro Tip: If you choose to add these companions, watch your watering closely. The companions will drink water, too!
4. Pruning for Potted Success
Pruning is even more important for container trees because you need to keep them small enough to thrive in their pot.
Winter Maintenance: Prune in late winter or early spring while the tree is dormant.
The "3 Ds": Always remove any wood that is Dead, Damaged, or Diseased.
Manage the Size: You can prune the outer branches back to keep the tree at a manageable height for your patio. Always cut just above an outward-facing bud to encourage the tree to grow wide rather than tall.
Airflow: Keep the center of the tree open. If the branches get too thick, the inner parts of the tree won't get enough sunlight, and you will lose out on fruit production.
Watering Note: Potted trees dry out much faster than ground trees. Check the soil moisture daily in the summer; if the top inch of soil is dry, it’s time to water!
Blueberry Planting
1. The Acid Test
Blueberries require a soil pH between 4.5 and 5.5.
- In-Ground: If your soil is neutral or alkaline (common in many regions), you must amend it with peat moss or elemental sulfur before planting.
- Containers: Use a dedicated "acid-loving" potting mix (often labeled for Azaleas, Camellias, or Rhododendrons) or mix 50% peat moss with 50% pine bark fines. Never use standard potting soil.
2. Planting Your Blueberries
In-Ground
- Prep the Bed: Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot. Mix in ample peat moss or composted pine bark to ensure acidity and drainage.
- Positioning: Plant your blueberry at the same depth it was in the nursery pot. Do not bury the stem deep.
- Pollination: Always plant at least two different varieties that bloom at the same time. Cross-pollination is essential for a heavy harvest.
In Containers
- Size: Use a pot that is at least 15 to 20 gallons. Blueberries have shallow, fibrous roots that need room to spread.
- Drainage: Ensure your pot has large drainage holes. Blueberries like moisture, but they will die if their roots sit in soggy, stagnant water.
- Mobility: Potted blueberries are easy to move. Place them in full sun during the growing season, and move them to a protected spot if you live in an area with freezing winter winds.
3. Mulching for Health
Because blueberries have shallow, fibrous roots, they do not like to compete with weeds, and they dry out quickly. A thick layer of mulch is essential for success.
- The Best Mulch: Use pine needles or pine bark nuggets. These materials are excellent for retaining moisture and, more importantly, they help maintain the acidic soil environment that blueberries thrive in.
- How to Apply: Apply a 2- to 3-inch layer around the base of the plant, extending out to the "drip line" (the edge of the branches).
- Important: Keep the mulch a few inches away from the main stems of the bush. Mulch touching the stem can hold too much moisture and cause the bark to rot.
4. Pruning for Maximum Berries
Blueberries are pruned differently than fruit trees. You aren't pruning for shape; you are pruning for cane age.
- When to Prune: Prune in late winter while the bush is dormant.
- The "Rule of Three":
- New Canes: These are usually bright green or red. They won't produce much fruit yet, so keep them.
- Productive Canes: These are the "middle-aged" canes (2–4 years old). They have healthy, productive fruiting wood.
- Old Canes: These are thick, grey, and woody with peeling bark. They produce very little fruit.
- The Action: Every year, remove about 20% of the oldest, thickest, grayest canes from the ground level. This forces the bush to send up new, vibrant, high-producing canes. If your bush becomes too crowded, trim out the center to allow sunlight and airflow to reach the berries.
